Jesus Unveiled: Urgency, Opposition, and the Narrow Door
Matthew 24:44 (ESV)
The Gospel is urgent, not casual.
Urgency is a Kingdom mindset, not an emotional response. Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” He didn’t offer a comforting answer. He didn’t give statistics. Instead, He said, “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” The word strive in Greek comes from the root of our word agony. It means to fight, to struggle, to press in. This isn’t about earning salvation, but it is about understanding the seriousness of the call. Many miss it because they assume being around Jesus is enough. Many miss it because they wait too long to respond. The Gospel is for all, but only a few truly walk through the door.
Opposition doesn’t cancel the mission, it sharpens it
When Jesus warned about the narrow door, the Pharisees interrupted Him with a threat: “Herod wants to kill you.” This wasn’t just noise. Herod’s family had already tried to kill Jesus as a baby. He had recently killed John the Baptist. This was a real and personal threat. But Jesus didn’t back down. He said, “Go tell that fox I am casting out demons and healing the sick. I will keep doing what the Father sent me to do.” The mission was more important than safety. If we are going to follow Jesus, we have to expect opposition. We’ll be misunderstood, mocked, and maybe even hated. But the mission doesn’t stop. It gets sharper.
The door is open, but it won’t stay that way forever
Jesus told the crowd, “Once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, many will stand outside and knock.” They’ll say, “We ate with You. We heard You teach.” But He will say, “I never knew you.” It’s not enough to be near Jesus. It’s not enough to hear the sermons or sing the songs. The invitation is real, but the opportunity is temporary. The door will close. And on that day, many who assumed they were in will be shut out.
Strive to enter. Don’t assume. Don’t delay. Don’t wait for a more convenient time. Walk through the narrow door while there’s still time.
